Rise Furniture and Mobility of Harrogate, has just been named National Retail Business of the Year, during a glittering gala awards evening at the Best New Business Awards in London’s West End.
Combining over 30 years' industry experience, Rise is the brainchild of Harrogate businessman, Carl Drake and his wife Angel. The North Yorkshire couple, are shaking up an industry where tired looking, inferior products, questionable sales techniques and appalling customer service are the industry norm.
The husband and wife team, decided to open their first Mobility showroom after becoming frustrated by their own first hand experience of the UK mobility market, struggling to find quality mobility products and daily living aids for their own parents.
Adding to their business awards: runners up in the Best Website category, customers can choose to shop online www.risemobility.co.uk as well as in-store.
The busy Harrogate showroom was specifically chosen for its on-site customer parking and wheelchair friendly access.
“We have created a pleasant, relaxed, stress-free shopping experience for anyone struggling with mobility or the difficulties in later life…where our customers can feel comfortable browsing, without being embarrassed. Free expert advice is always on hand, we don’t use pushy telesales techniques or employ hard selling commission only salesmen, so customers can buy with confidence.
“Our ‘person-centred’ approach helps us better understand the needs of our customers and an ever-increasing customer base, from as far afield as Aberdeen and Brighton, we think people really enjoy the experience and our unique approach.
Speaking after the presentation, owner Carl Drake said he was “absolutely over the moon with the award. Being shortlisted as one of the top four retailers in the country was an achievement in itself, so to win the category against much larger and more established businesses, is a dream come true”.
“It’s very satisfying knowing our products are changing people’s lives, helping them maintain their independence to enjoy life at home for longer.” Carl said.
FSB’s local Development Manager in North Yorkshire, Carolyn Frank, said “This is amazing news for Rise Mobility and so well deserved. Our region has so many great small businesses doing really innovative work and providing top quality customer service, and it is wonderful to see a local business achieving such prestigious recognition on the National stage.
In a time when retail as a sector is struggling nationally, it is great to have a good news story that demonstrates there is hope for retailers when they get it right and really put their customers first. We hope that Carl is an inspiration to other small businesses to apply for awards including our FSB awards, and gain the recognition they deserve for their hard work.”
This modern day, David and Goliath story for the Yorkshire retailer, is bucking the trend, as more and more high street shops fall into decline. To take the coveted title, Retail Business of the year, beating many more established and esteemed businesses, from all sectors of retail is an incredible achievement in such tough times.
