Twelve winning East Midlands businesses go forward to the UK’s Best Small Business 2018 finals

Drones, Reusable Nappies, Coffee Pods and Fish and chips: The FSB East Midlands’ Celebrating Small Business Awards showcased 2018’s most inspiring small businesses

Northamptonshire business Bambino Mio, successful producer and exporter of reusable nappies who have capitalised on a growing market for sustainable, eco-friendly family products, is one of the businesses that has beaten off stiff competition to be crowned one of the East Midlands’s best small businesses.

It was named as the East Midlands Digital Business of the Year– one of 12 award category winners at the FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards at The Doubletree by Hilton, Nottingham.

Other winners on the day included Simon Crowther of Nottinghamshire, who took the East Midlands’ FSB Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for his business Flood Protection Systems Ltd which he founded while still at University and seeks to use technology to prevent flood damage.

Drone Defence Services came out as ‘one to watch’, taking home the Start-Up Business of the Year award for their work on drone technology, addressing it’s capabilities and risks.

Lincoln’s Elite Fish and Chip Company won Family Business of the Year, recognising 30 years and three generations who have built up the business, while Chesterfield-based Peak Coffee, founded by retired police inspector Glyn Jones and his wife Sue, took away the award for Micro Business of the year for their ethically-sourced coffee pods which are sold across Europe.

The awards were attended and presented by VIP representatives from a host of organisations including the British Business Bank and Midlands Engine Investment Fund, the Department for International Trade, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Cabinet Office and East Midlands Airport, all keen to celebrate and encourage some of the East Midlands’ most vibrant and inspiring businesses.

Derbyshire-based PCPM, FSB members and winners of Scale-Up Business of the Year who supply refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for the likes of McDonalds and Pizza Express said their whole team was buzzing after winning.

MD Peter Crown said “We are absolutely delighted to have scooped this award. It is a fantastic honour and is testament to the commitment, hard work and passion shown by the whole team. We were up against some fantastic East Midlands businesses in our category and were honoured to even be shortlisted, so to go on and win is amazing and we’re now looking forward to representing the region at the national awards in London, later in the year.”

David Dexter, FSB East Midlands Regional Chair, said: “Congratulations to all this year’s East Midlands FSB Business Award winners. They are reflective of the vibrancy, innovation and resilience that makes up our region’s small business community. It’s been thrilling to see so many of the region’s businesses enthusiastically take part in our awards and the sheer scale and diversity of those who entered is a testimony to the vitality of the small business community in the East Midlands. We all wish the very best of luck to all our regional winners for the UK national award finals in May.”
