Spring brings Expo Season in Somerset and Wiltshire and in the last fortnight we have been involved in expos in both counties. We were delighted to have a presence at the Somerset Business Show at Brean Country Club and the South Wiltshire Business Expo at Salisbury Guildhall.
Why do we endure the long days, early starts and sore feet I hear you ask? Being involved in a local business show has lots of benefits for the FSB:
• We get the chance to meet potential new members and to explain the benefits of being part of our nationwide organisation with a national voice. Our Membership Advisers Keith and Jill both had successful days and signed up some delighted new members who were not aware of how they could join our business community before the show.
• It is also a great opportunity to chat with existing members and as a Development Manager this is my favourite part. It is lovely when people drop by and let us know what they love about being a member and how they have used their membership. Most frequent anecdotes include using our legal help line and being grateful for the support of our team when HMRC decide to do a tax investigation. One member recently told me he actually got a refund as a result of an investigation with our assistance and you can’t wish for a better result than that!
• The final benefit of being at a show is of embedding ourselves as part of the local business ecosystem. Wandering round the stands and chatting with other exhibitors is a great way to forge alliances and to build relationships, which all helps when our members need support.
A huge thank you need to go to our volunteers John Mayer (Area Lead for Somerset) and Mary Webb from Salisbury for giving up their time to support our stands and for sharing their enthusiasm for the FSB with show attendees. They really help the days fly by and their local networks bring an additional dimension to our involvement. As you can see from these photos their smiley faces provided a great welcome to visitors to our stand!
