Small Business Commissioner visit to Hampshire to tackle late payment issues for small businesses

Test Valley Borough Council hosted a business event on 20 June in Romsey featuring England’s Small Business Commissioner, Paul Uppal, together with a leading speaker from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

The subject of the half-day conference was how small businesses can manage their cash flow when dealing with larger customers – public as well as private.  There will be an opportunity to hear directly from, and question, key representatives from Test Valley Borough Council and FSB as well as the Small Business Commissioner.  The event will also allow you to find out what local and national government can do to help your small business grow and prosper.

The Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Portfolio Holder, David Drew commented: "The Council does a lot to support small businesses, and making sure their customers settle invoices promptly is a key element to running any successful business."

Policy Lead for FSB in Hampshire Tim Colman said, “Poor payment practice is an epidemic plaguing far too many small businesses in the UK.  Unreasonable payment terms, supply chain bullying and late payments are just some of the ways that some big businesses use to squeeze suppliers. The Government has been proactive in attempting to stamp out the worst kind of poor payment practices but more must be done, and it must be done now.”
