New jobs figures will cheer local businesses

Scotland’s unemployment rate has fallen to 3.8%, below the UK figure of 4.3%, according to official statistics published today.

Stuart Mackinnon, external affairs manager for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in Scotland said: “Low unemployment is great for Scotland and good for firms that serve our local communities. While we know that some firms are concerned about skills and labour shortages, that shouldn’t detract from what is good news for the country.

“We’d highlight that an increasing number of Scots are self-employed; about one in eight of those in work are their own boss. Therefore more government policies need to be designed with these people in mind – specifically childcare and welfare initiatives.”
