The Small Business Saturday (SBS) tour bus recently visited Brighton and parked up at Jubilee Library in the North Laine area, and for a very good reason. In tandem with the SBS campaign, it highlighted the opening of a new centre supporting start up and smaller businesses in Brighton, Sussex and across the south east.
The Business & IP Centre (BIPC) will open its doors early in 2020 and will offer services for Intellectual Property searches, registrations and confidential one to one support consultations with qualified IP advisors. One such advisor (and FSB member) is Clive Bonny (pictured right), Director of Strategic Management Partners. Alongside him on the day was FSB’s Andrew Murphy (pictured left): on hand to inform Brighton and hove businesses of the many benefits of FSB membership.
Clive said, “This is a fabulous facility to support local business continuity. Every year 1000 or so small firms in Brighton stop trading and we need to do all we can to keep them in business. These businesses need to know that registering their trademark for just £170 can increase their online enquiries and reduce their annual costs of domain name registrations. Trademark protection can last a lifetime and grants are available to subsidise the costs of advisors and application fees. I’m already helping entrepreneurs who attended the launch day back in October.”
This local initiative is part of a wider national support programme helping start-ups and small firms to access free facilities which were previously only available at the British Library in London. Customer data there shows 23% are now employed and a further 46% are running their own businesses. With these facilities nationally helping to create 12,000 new businesses, 7,000 extra jobs and £78 million of economic value, it was a clear and sensible move for the City’s Library Service to get behind a new centre. Importantly, 60% of these new ventures have social and environmental aims.
FSB’s Andrew Murphy added “If you have a business idea, just starting out or have a small business you’d like to grow, book a date to visit the BIPC in the new year. It’s a free service to support small business owners, entrepreneurs and inventors like you.”
