Members discussed plans for the proposed Lower Thames Crossing with Project Director Tim Jones this month.
Following a presentation, members asked Tim a range of questions from how the project would remove waste from the site; to how the junction of Blue Bell Hill/ A229 would cope with additional traffic flow and concerns around the flow of traffic at A249.
Tim confirmed part of the consultation would be gathering evidence and concerns such as this, so he can raise these issues directly with Government Ministers.
The Lower Thames Crossing will have:
- approximately 14.5 miles (23km) of new roads connecting the tunnel to the existing road network
- three lanes in both directions with a maximum speed limit of 70mph
- improvements to the M25, A2 and A13, where the Lower Thames Crossing connects to these roads
- ·new structures and changes to existing ones (including bridges, buildings, tunnel entrances, viaducts and utilities such as electricity pylons) along the length of the new road
- two 2.5 mile (4km) tunnels, one for southbound traffic, one for northbound traffic crossing beneath the river
- a free-flow charging system, where drivers do not need to stop but pay remotely, similar to that at the Dartford Crossing
A survey of FSB members in June 2018 showed that:
- 63% said traffic congestion was a major challenge to their business
- 62% of respondents want Government to invest in road infrastructure
- 53% believe the Lower Thames Crossing will help their business grow
- 49.6% believe it will give them better access to customers
