Is back pain hurting your business?

FSB member Suzette Pulman, of Lymm Osteopathic Practice, says that pain in the workplace does not respect age, status or occupation. If you run your own business and suffer pain, but can’t take time off to rest – or wait weeks for a referral from a GP - what do you do?

“Musculoskeletal pain, whether in the back, neck or elsewhere can affect anyone in any job, resulting in a dramatic effect on productivity and absence. Last year, according to the HSE, 8.8 million working days were lost due to work related musculoskeletal disorders,” said Susan.

“Osteopaths use techniques such as physical manipulation, stretching and massage which helps the body’s own healing mechanisms and results in relief of pain and increased physical mobility and function. Advice on posture and exercise helps prevent symptoms recurring.

“A first appointment lasts about 45 to 60 minutes, because an osteopath will take time to listen and ask questions about your problem, general health and medical history. Typically many conditions can be relieved in three or four sessions, with patients being able to work again, play sport and lead a normal life.”

Treatment is generally private and is often covered by many medical insurance schemes, although some health insurance companies do require you to be referred by a doctor first. Find out more at
