Why you applied?
I entered this competition because we are very proud of what we do at Durham Hens. We have a small, but very dedicated, team and I wanted to showcase our achievements.
What it meant to be shortlisted?
To be shortlisted for the national final was amazing. There are so many small businesses in this country that offer exceptional services and products. To be up there in the top four was amazing.
What it feels like to win?
Incredible! To be recognised by two such prestigious organisations, FSB and Worldpay, at this level is simply incredible. We were absolutely delighted to win ... and it took several days for the news to sink in!
What your plans are for 2017 and beyond?
We intend to continue the expansion of Durham Hens by franchising parts of the business throughout the UK. This is an exciting development and we expect there to be a lot of interest. We also intend to increase our breeding pens and flocks so we can meet the UK demand for fertile hatching eggs.
What advice would you give to people who want to start their own business?
Running your own business is hard work, but hopefully you’ll be doing something you enjoy. You need a good plan, dedication, persistence and self-belief. Always do everything to the best of your ability, and hard work usually does pay off.
