Huw Merriman MP joins FSB for breakfast

On a gloriously sunny morning, Huw Merriman, MP for Bexhill and Battle, addressed the monthly FSB Connect breakfast for April (pictured).

The networking breakfast took place in the pleasant surroundings of the Cooden Beach Golf Club, and drew businesses from the Rother and Wealden area. Huw spoke of the need for transport infrastructure improvements in East Sussex. East Sussex is the only County in England without a motorway network and has only 11 miles of duel carriageway.

The quickest trains to London take an hour and half whilst from Milton Keynes, the equivalent north London town by distance, the journey takes 32 minutes. Huw referred to increasing duelling on the A21, the main trunk road from London to Hastings, and bringing High Speed One train services from Kent into East Sussex. These, he said would be ‘game changing’ for the East Sussex economy.

FSB is supportive of these developments, together with a dual carriageway expressway on the east-west A27 from Polegate (Cophall roundabout) to Lewes (Southerham roundabout). “FSB lobbies for business to help make sure our transport systems in the south east are sustainable for the future. Major investment in transport is required to ensure we can cope with growing housing demand and create the jobs needed for our economy.

But the tough challenge, which Huw pointed out, is this needs to be done in an environmentally sensitive and future proof way that impacts positively on people’s quality of life,” said Martin Searle, FSB’s Development Manager.
