FSB meets up with Devon County Council

FSB Devon attended a Scrutiny Meeting at Devon County Council last week to talk about the impact of Broadband on the area.

Firstly, we would like to say a huge thank you to all the members who took the time to send in their thoughts, issues and their broadband speeds.

All this was really useful as it gave us a good background for the discussion. Some areas in the Devon Patch are still without any decent broadband - Okehampton, Credition,  Tiverton and most of North Devon (although BT say that there is good coverage). These areas are raised by members as a problem as often as the many rural patches that we are aware have simply been missed.

As part of the Scrutiny meeting we were asked about Mobile Coverage and members in Devon have reported that the coverage is pretty poor all over Devon.

All the feedback was used in a report for the meeting so it was very useful.

The meeting itself started with a number of questions, but it soon became clear that this was an entirely different meeting to other meetings we had been to about broadband – firstly the Council team wanted to really know about how the lack of decent broadband was affecting members and they were interested in the views.

Sue Wilkinson, Development Manager, said: "This is the first time I've been to a meeting about broadband and the lack of it in Devon and I really felt that those in the meeting were listening.

"I also for the first time got the impression that they wanted to do something about it.  So maybe this time we will finally start to see some improvements in the coverage of both services in Devon.  I really hope so."
