Continuing its series of MP business roundtables, FSB met with Gillian Keegan MP for Chichester at Portcullis House (pictured). Gillian is a keen supporter of apprenticeships, being an ex-apprentice herself, and discussed with members how more apprenticeships could be offered in the Financial Services sector. Members expressed the need to improve the pipeline of talent into the industry, especially for younger, knowledgeable and motivated Independent Financial Advisors. The group also discussed support to better match apprentices with employers through a more robust hiring process.

In her MP Apprenticeship Ambassador role, Gillian will be addressing the West Sussex Apprentice Graduation Ceremony at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley, via video, as she has Parliamentary business on the day. Co-organiser of the event, FSB’s Martin Searle (pictured left) , said “We are really appreciative of Gillian’s efforts in supporting this event which aims to celebrate the achievements of apprentices across West Sussex. It also raises awareness amongst employers, schools and colleges that this is the route for many people nowadays to train and build a career.”

At the roundtable, FSB also discussed transport with Gillian – especially how to gain improvements to the A27. Like Gillian, FSB are disappointed that the planned solution to traffic congestion around Chichester, proposed by Highways England, utilising the southern by-pass, was rejected locally. “The alternative, a by-pass north of Chichester, seems to literally kick the matter into the long grass,” commented Martin Searle. “This proposal will take several years to come to the table and is in competition with more ‘shovel-ready’ A27 schemes such as the east of Lewes proposal for an offline dual carriageway to Polegate.”

FSB, finally, expressed the need for greater certainty for business and to resolve the situation concerning the UK’s exit from the EU – a position Gillian Keegan wholeheartedly agreed with.
