Apart from the usual Committee meetings I have had a busy few months. Before I go into the detail I would like to say a big thank you to my Regional Committee for all their hard work as volunteers throughout the year and also a special thank you to Ray Abrahams our Development Manager.
I attended the launch MIPIM 2017 at the House of Commons in the summer where I took the opportunity of speaking to representatives of both Coast to Capital and Enterprise M3 LEP’s to MP’s and to Council leaders to maintain our close working relationships for the benefit of FSB members.
I was invited to a demonstration in Purley with regard to business rates to support the local traders.
The report commissioned by the London Region on business rates was the topic of a lot of conversation by the attending GLA member and the local MP and no doubt feature in future debates at the House of Commons for months to come. On the Friday prior to the Budget I met up with Kwasi Kwarten MP the PPS to the Chancellor Philip Hammond. I was happy to receive some assurances as to the content of the budget in view of a few scare stories that had been publicised.
I hosted an event at the Holiday Inn at Gatwick to give an explanation of “refreshing our roots” to members and how the changes will affect us all. At the ensuing Q&A session I answered queries raised by those present. I emphasised that I had been busy identifying activists throughout the region to help push forward the FSB in the New Year.
All that remains for me to say is to you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Regards, Brian Woods, Surrey and West Sussex Regional Chairman
