I am delighted to announce that Lesley Batchelor OBE, Director General of the Institute of Export and International Trade, will be on the expert panel at ‘Destination Export – Small  Businesses as Strategic Exporters,’ our major event at the International Business Festival in Liverpool this summer, writes Chris Walker of FSB.

Lesley will add her considerable expertise and experience to the headline event, which is all about overcoming the barriers that prevent many firms from embracing the opportunities presented by export and international trade.

This, indeed, is the point of the bi-annual festival, which since its inception in 2014 has welcomed 194 international market delegations, led to over £500 million worth of business deals, generated £87 million in exports and £250 million in sales.

Projections for IBF2018 show an anticipated 30,000 unique visitors from 12-28 June – double that of 2016 – and of course we’ll be there for the duration.

Our main event is inspired from FSB’s recent research ‘Destination Export: The small business export landscape,’ which showed that one in five small businesses already export – and that there is the potential to double the number of small business exporters in the UK.

One of the key findings is that the number of small businesses currently exporting is matched by those that would consider exporting (21%). In addition, of all small businesses exporters, one in five, (21%) have remained static for many years, indicating the potential of existing exporters to markedly increase their operations overseas.

The majority of exporting FSB members export to the single market with provides access to 500 million potential consumers, more than 26 million businesses and is worth around £9 trillion. The result of the EU referendum means that efforts to support small firms to increase exports is more important than ever.

The event seeks to address the opportunities and challenges faced by small businesses exploring international trade. It will be a major platform on which to showcase our research and further establish FSB as a thought-leader in the export field at what is being billed as the world’s biggest business festival.

There is an exclusive offer of FREE access to the festival on June 12th for delegates who sign up to FSB’s event here. Also, in April, there is 20% off festival day tickets for those registering via FSB. Email phil.mccabe@fsb.org.uk or Reshma.begum@fsb.org.uk for your discount code.

Further, we will host receptions with businesses and representatives from countries across the world to provide small businesses with direct access to overseas markets, helping them to understand what it takes to break each one.

We will also be exhibiting in the International Marketplace throughout – so make sure you pop in and see us, and please do spread the word in your regions that a world of opportunities in one place will be there for the taking this summer.
