FSB Devon sponsored the Ninth Exeter Pride event which took place on the 13th of May 2017. Hopefully you will have seen us at the event but if not here’s a flavour of what it was, why we sponsored it. There is also a video link if you are interested FSB Exeter Pride.
Exeter Pride is the biggest free celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) communities in the county of Devon - and is one of the first Pride events in the UK every year.
This year the rainbow flag was paraded from the St Sidwell Centre down Exeter High Street to Northernhay Gardens, Exeter Phoenix, Exeter Library to Rougemont Gardens. Hundreds of people supported this event and took part in the parade. It was particularly good to see the police and firefighters in the parade.
Why is FSB involved – well because the business case for diversity is important, mixed teams of different gender, ethnicity, physical ability, age and sexual orientation are far more representative of the population businesses work with. FSB wants to help drive and support a cultural change towards diversity in business and see a more equal and fair businesses environment. Diversity in the workplace is important for both business owners and employees as it leads to greater innovation, improved attraction and retention of staff and a meritocratic culture.
Diversity means recognising and understanding that each individual is unique. When teams of different ethnicities, genders and sexual orientation work together they bring together a variety of viewpoints and a wider range of experience which can lead to better understanding of the world in which we live.
“Diversity in the work place has many business benefits these have been confirmed repeatedly through both research and personal experience. There are still many employers who remain unaware of the real and lasting benefits of a diverse workforce.” Devon Vice Chair, Daniel Hillier
