Apprentices are the focus of Weston work

The importance of encouraging FSB members to consider going down the apprenticeship route when taking on new staff is one of our long-term policy initiatives.

According to a major FSB report, last year, up to a quarter of our members already take on apprentices but a further quarter would consider doing so if they felt they were there was enough Government support to help them do so.

A such, we are currently working on a campaign which will culminate in an event in the Weston-super-Mare area to do some ‘myth busting' about what is involved in taking on apprentices (such as what costs are involved), what work is needed by the small businesses during the training and what sort of professions, skills and trades are now part of the wider national apprenticeship programme.

Although details had not been finalised at time of going to press, our aim is to join forces with Western College – one of the best apprenticeship providing colleges in the South West – to have an event where FSB members can hear from not only the college staff who help facilitate apprenticeships but also current apprentices and small business owners who have taken them on to explain how the system works.

Look out in our weekly email newsletter Bitesize for full details of this important event.
