Our Regional Chairman, Brian Woods had a very busy day on Friday 19th October (not that other days are not busy but this one was exceptional!).
A usual day consists of meetings/telephone calls with the Area DM, Ray Abrahams but Friday meant a very early start to meet with Kwasi Kwarteng MP and Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond MP for a breakfast meeting to discuss the forthcoming budget on Monday 29th October.
A briefing from Catherine Place our Press and Parliamentary Office was provided the day before. Upon arrival the PPS made a beeline to greet Brian a relationship established on trust and expertise over a considerable period of time including their recent being together and presenting certificates and medals at the Guildford Cathedral Apprenticeship Ceremony.
Disclosure of their conversations are not permitted prior to the Budget suffice it to say that issues discussed were business rates, lowering of the VAT threshold (again) and of course Brexit negations so far. These meetings prove the value of establishing excellent relationships with decision makers but it does not happen overnight as Brian well knows, many hours of investment pays FSB dividends.
On Brian’s journey to his office in Reigate, Surrey from breakfast with the PPS he receives a telephone call from his DM – BBC Radio Surrey and Sussex want to interview a FSB spokesperson live on radio on Bank closures.
Who could be better placed than Brian with NatWest closing their branch in Reigate his office town! Lunchtime interview completed and Brian has an end of week meeting with his staff interrupted by his FSB DM to give him the good news that his recent highly qualified apprentice is the talk of the National Apprenticeship Service. Further details will follow. Phew! What a day. Thank you Mr Regional Chairman.
