When you own a small business, time is often scarce meaning that it can be difficult to find the time to fit in those every day life admin tasks such as fixing car problems and health appointments. The same can also be said for your team members who may struggle to get all of their life admin tasks done outside of their normal working hours. Employees often have to take time out of their working day in order to fit everything in, either working from home or taking a day’s annual leave.

How life admin affects small businesses

It might come as little surprise to learn that employees’ life admin is having a negative impact on SMEs. According to a survey conducted on behalf of AXA PPP healthcare, over three quarters of respondents (76%) reported an adverse effect on their business when employees are tied up with life admin during work time. Of these, 28% said it affected their business’ productivity, 25% said it affected employee morale, 24% said it put pressure on remaining employees’ workloads and 23% felt it caused unnecessary stress among their team1.

As well as having a negative impact on the employee in question, life admin during working hours can also affect the rest of the team. They may be required to pick up the workload during the time that their colleague is absent which could ultimately affect the overall productivity of the business.

How life admin affects employees

In another survey conducted on behalf of AXA PPP healthcare, 82% of employees said that they struggle to get these everyday life admin tasks done outside of normal working hours (8am-6pm)2. Of these, 45% said that getting a doctor’s appointment for themselves was the task that they find most difficult to do outside of normal working hours. It therefore seems that employees have to take time away from work in order to attend medical appointments. According to one survey, British workers reported missing an average of four days of work each year in order to seek medical advice3.

It can cause unnecessary stress for employees when they have to try and fit their medical appointments in around their working schedule. If you’re a parent or a carer, you may also have the added complication of juggling your working hours with caring for your loved one. According to our research, 10% of parents stated that time taken up due to childcare was the biggest difficulty that they faced when it comes to finding the time to complete life admin tasks outside of normal working hours2.
