Five minutes with Paul Venn, owner of Chilly White

Tell us about your business…

Chilly White is a catering business that specialises in providing an ice cream tricycle service at weddings and other events in the south of England.

Why did you start this business?

I had a hunger to start my own ice cream business after visiting the Lyons Maid factory where my late grandfather worked. So in 2012 I decided to buy a second-hand ice cream tricycle.

How has your business developed since then?

After a successful summer in 2013, I realised one tricycle wasn’t enough. I bought two more and employed friends to help at events. I now have five ice cream tricycles, various other fun food carts, and I also offer lawn games and props.

What’s the best thing about working for yourself?

Monday morning lie-ins. And I’m not in the Monday-to-Friday rat race.

What’s the worst?

Not really being able to go to summer events or on holiday during the summer while I am working.

What advice do you have for people keen to start a new business?

Research, research, research…

How has FSB membership helped you?

It has given me the support and backing to safeguard my business.

Tell us something fun…

We always get asked if we cycled to the event, even if we’re 100 miles away from base.
