Five minutes with: Family-run firm Danny&co

Danny Mathews of Danny&co. gives us his business story.

Tell us about your business

Danny&co. is a family-run graphic design studio that I started out of a deep desire I had to work with people I believe in. People sometimes think that it’s a bit ‘out there’ when I say that branding can change the world, but I really believe it.

How did the business get started? 

I always wanted to be a designer. I even went through the Prince’s Trust when I was a teenager to start an eco-friendly design and print company. I was offered match-funding but couldn’t match it, so ended up spending a decade in insurance and mortgages before finding my way back into doing what I love.

 



How has the business developed since then? 

The majority of what we do is branding and identity design, but we have evolved to take on regular clients for content design and repurposing. That includes creating e-books, images, course workbooks and graphics for social media and print.

What’s the best thing about working for yourself? 

Being able to manage my own time and making decisions based on being a good human being, rather than on profitability and the bottom line.

What’s the worst? 

Working for myself sometimes means removing myself from what I want to be doing to do something that needs to be addressed temporarily, such as managing the team or unexpected project changes.

What advice do you have for people keen to start a new business? 

Get help early and hire before you need to. I spent so long thinking I’m a self-starter and can do it all, only to find out that it all kicked off when I asked for help.
