When you think of the type of career that leads a person into broadcasting, accountancy might not be near the top of the list, but that hasn’t stopped Matthew and Chantal Baker.
The husband-and-wife team run Champ Consultants, an accountancy practice based in Caterham, Surrey, which they founded in 1999. While accountancy is their focus, on Friday mornings they turn their attention to the radio show they host on a local community station.
Ridge Radio is a community station run by volunteers that broadcasts online at ridgeradio.co.uk and via apps like TuneIn. It receives approximately 27,000 listeners a week across its schedule.
The couple’s show is aimed at small business owners and entrepreneurs looking to improve their business. Each week features a guest talking about an area of expertise or their local business.
“The station had been asking us to do a business show for a long time but when they moved the studio to a location very close to our office we couldn’t say no, and started the show last January,” says Matthew.
“It has been great for our profile and is a unique selling point for us. It also helps us to network with guests as we put something back into the business community. It shows us to be proactive accountants who can give advice as well as crunch the numbers.”
