Digital Strategy must focus on small firms’ requirements

The Government’s Digital Strategy needs to focus on the needs of the small business community if it is to be effective in raising productivity and growth, FSB has warned. 

“We need fit-for-purpose digital infrastructure and help for small businesses to develop their businesses online,” said Mike Cherry, National Chairman.

Poor mobile phone coverage is a concern. “Seventy per cent of small businesses report that their mobile phone is critical to their business,” he said. “Many members tell us that basic mobile coverage is lacking.”

The Digital Strategy also aims to boost digital skills and confidence across businesses. “Tackling the skills gap across the workforce needs to begin early,” said Mr Cherry. “This, however, cannot be a one-off – free basic digital skills training throughout everyone’s working lives will be important.”

FSB is helping to ensure small firms are more confident in operating online through the business-led Do It Digital campaign, and is now providing basic cyber insurance for all members. Go to
