Digital drive helps to crystallise success at snow sports centre

When you think of businesses that run indoor snow slopes and ice climbing walls, you wouldn’t necessarily think a progressive digital approach would be a high priority, but that’s exactly the case at one Scottish company.

Snow Factor, based in Braehead near Glasgow, is Scotland’s only indoor real snow sports destination. It has seen online sales achieve over 60 per cent growth year-on-year since 2012, after adopting a digital-first strategy.


This included launching new websites, introducing new online booking structures, improving management of search engine optimisation and pay-per-click, and maximising customer engagement through social media channels.

Such has been the success of its digital operation that Snow Factor was recently named digital business of the year in the inaugural Scottish section of the FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards 2018.

Snow Factor is owned by Jamie Smith, the mountaineer and entrepreneur, who before acquiring the business in 2011 opened Ice Factor Kinlochleven, which boasts the world’s biggest  indoor ice-climbing walls.


“In recent years, we have made considerable investment across our digital platforms,” he says. “I believe this has been recognised by our ongoing results, including increased online bookings, improved engagement with customers, and winning the best digital business award at the FSB’s Celebrating Small Business Awards.”
